Sceptre 43
Boat location: Vuda, FIJI.
In 1982, Sceptre 43 hull # 1 was launched: a unique design that was 20 years ahead of its time, ultimately became known as a “deck salon” yacht and is now exclusively for sale with DBY Boat sales.
The purpose of this unique design was to accommodate the cool, wet summers of the Pacific Northwest of the US and Canada. To that end, the boat had both cockpit and inside steering stations which required unique fenestration in the cabin for the helmsperson to see while steering inside. The result is an interior that is bright, light and feels as though you are outside even while below. Complimenting the unique design is a very ruggedly built hull (3/4 “solid fiberglass) of moderate draft (6 feet) that tracks well in all conditions.
The current owners purchased the boat in 2004 and the following year extended the hull with a 2 foot “sugar scoop” transom, following the new Sceptre 43 design. There are several benefits to the extension: the 41’ tended to “squat” under power, the new transom makes boarding the vessel from a dinghy much easier and it is an important safety feature as bringing an overboard person back onto the boat is greatly facilitated.
Conceived as a Cutter rig with a detachable inner forestay, the current owners have found over the past 20 years that the roller furling genoa & the main reefing system have been adequate for all conditions incurred. The vessel is rigged to use a staysail and a new, never used staysail is onboard.
The boat is set-up so that the boat can readily be handled by one or two crew from the cockpit. With the exception of the roller furling genoa halyard, all running rigging, including the roller genoa reefing line, is led aft to the cockpit where it is serviced by 5 Lewmar 40 self-tailing winches and 2 Lewmar 58 primary self-tailing winches.
In addition to the glass windshield to accommodate inside steering, the cockpit is protected by a dodger & bimini system with side curtains for spray as well as side curtains for shade. Aft of the cockpit, there are stainless steel Kato davits for hoisting the 10’6” AB Dinghy with outboard.
Glide has safely travelled from Maine to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, the Bahamas & Haiti, throughout the Western Caribbean, through the Panama Canal to the Galapagos, French Polynesia, Cook Island, Niue, Tonga & Fiji.
Over the years numerous upgrades include:
Corian counters in the galley & head
LED lighting
KISS wind generator
Stainless railing around cockpit
Water maker
New refrigerator and freezer
New mast, rigging, mainsail & genoa in 2012 which was not used from 2019-2022 while the boat was laid up in Tonga
