Charlie Peel 35.
1938 Charlie Peel 35 for sale exclusively with DBY Boat Sales.
Built in 1938 the historic and famous Southerly is reluctantly on the market. Built of splined Huon Pine this beautiful yacht will bring much pride to a new owner who is able to love and maintain her as a true Australian built classic.
Most famously owned by Don Mickleborough for 53 years, since 1957. She is a 84 year old 34 footer designed by Charlie Peel. Initially a harbour racer she underwent modifications in 1957 for conversion to a prolific ocean racer.
After the refit and upgrade she was relaunched in time to contest the 1958 Hobart race
Mickleborough ultimately skippered her in 14 Sydney to Hobarts from 1958-2000 including an impressive divisional win in 1994 and 3rd in 1995.
The plaques for all these races are proudly displayed in the main cabin.
She has successfully crossed and returned across the Tasman to New Zealand. This amazing yacht has proven pedigree.
The hull presents very fair with clean topsides and decks in good presentation.
Her rigging is recent and has an upgraded Hood genoa furler.
The interior features lots of exposed Huon Pine and whilst quite sparse and basic, is dry and homely.
For a piece of nostalgia and history Southerly is seeking a modest price.
But most important her current owners want a new owner who will care for her for generations to come.
