Freedom 38

1990 Freedom 38 now for sale with DBY Boat Sales.

The first thing you notice when you step below on the Freedom 38 Silver Seas is the quality of the WOODWORK. The joinery and finish are second to none in the boat building industry, built by skilled craftsmen and not computers.

This iconic Gary Mull design is the perfect-sized coastal cruiser for two couples or a couple with children, but also has the equipment and storage space of a long-range voyager or even a live-aboard home.

Up forward is a spacious V-BERTH that is well-lit and ventilated by a large overhead hatch. There are shelves on the port and starboard sides of the forward cabin, as well as private access to the head. The HEAD is also accessible from the main salon and has had all sanitation hoses and Y-valves replaced in 2016 and also serves as an enclosed shower.

The MAIN SALON has 6'4" of headroom and comfortable seating for 8 people on starboard and port settees, the port side being L-shaped. A large DINING TABLE can be folded up and stowed against the forward bulkhead when not in use, cleverly hiding and securing storage shelves behind it. There is a great amount of STORAGE SPACE in the main salon on shelves and behind and beneath the settees.

The U-shaped GALLEY is located to port and is equipped with a refrigerator, two-burner propane stove/oven and as well as containing multiple dedicated cabinets for storage.

The NAVIGATION STATION is located to starboard and features a large table surface (actually big enough for a chart!).

The SWITCH PANEL and redundant B&G instrument displays are neatly organized and labeled.

The AFT CABIN is located to starboard and contains a large double berth. It is well lit and ventilated by two opening ports and has a cabin fan as well as plenty of closet and storage space.

The headroom and wide beam, as well as the multiple port lights and overhead deck hatches, give the cabin on Silver Seas a light, spacious feel. (There are also LED cabin lights.) Two 12-volt cabin fans in the salon and one 12-volt fan in each in the cabins, as well as cowl vents, provide excellent air circulation. You will never feel claustrophobic in this cabin!

On Deck
The COCKPIT of the Freedom 38 is roomy and seats 6 people comfortably.

Silver Seas is equipped with a dodger, bimini and when fully deployed turn the cockpit into another enclosed living area. The navigation instrument are mounted on the pedestal with good sight lines while at the helm. All control lines and halyards are lead back into the cockpit to a pair of Barient winches for easy sail management.

Integral scoop SWIM PLATFORM on stern accessed through stern rail and folding swim ladder. Solar panels and other antennas as well as Anchor light mounted on solid stainless steel DAVITS for an 8.5 foot RIB dinghy. Wind generator dedicated mast at stern. The Tohatsu 9.8 OUTBOARD MOTOR HOIST mounted on stern pole.

Moving forward, one notices the WIDE, UNOBSTRUCTED SIDE DECKS. There are no shrouds, or chain plates to get in the way. There are no genoa tracks on the deck to stub your toe on!

The gelcoat on the deck and cabin top has been well-maintained and is in excellent shape. There is just enough BRIGHTWORK in varnished handrails and rub rail to add beautiful accents, but not so much that you have to devote your life to maintaining it, or pay a fortune for someone else to do it.

The ANCHORING SYSTEM consists of a Quick Pro-Series 1000 ELECTRIC WINDLASS with 250 feet of 5/16" Acco chain to a 20 kg primary anchor.

HALYARDS and control lines renewed between 2017and 2019, all in good condition. All blocks and deck line organizers functional and in good shape. Double life lines on deck.

Sails and Rig
Silver Seas comes equipped with a 377.65 sq. ft. full-battened mainsail and a 195.35 sq. foot self-tacking jib. There are two jiffy reef points in the main operated by a single line system lead back to the cockpit. She is also equipped with lines leading back to dedicated winches in the cockpit.

Mainsail handling is facilitated by a HARKEN BATTCAR SAIL SLIDE system on the mast track so the main can be hoisted and dropped with virtually no friction. The main is contained on the boom by lazy jacks. The painted aluminum boom is supported by a rigid boom vang.

The FREE-STANDING CARBON FIBER MAST, though initially very expensive to build, has many advantages over aluminum masts. There is no need for wire standing rigging, with multiple terminal fittings and turnbuckles that require tuning and maintenance and are subject to sudden failure. There is no need for through-deck chain plates, which are prone to leaking and can cause soft spots in the deck. There are no spreaders for cormorants to sit on. Light weight and extremely strong, the carbon fiber mast has the ability to flex and spill wind in gusts, eliminating excessive heel and increasing upwind performance.

The expense of building free-standing carbon fiber rigs precludes widespread use among boat builders, but they are one of the reasons Freedom Yachts are still highly sought after in the used boat market.
