International Cadet Class Racing

Our Melbourne DBY&M manager Chris Furey was out watching his kids sailing in the International Cadet Class racing off Williamstown on Port Phillip on Sunday Nov 25. At the same time, the Classic Yacht Association yachts were conducting one of their regular summer race days. Chris is never seen on the water without his Nikon and chanced upon this wonderful scene. The International Cadet “Exciten” from Geelong was competing in a selection series to choose the Victorian team for the interstate challenge held as part of the class Nationals, this year to take place at Sandy Bay Sailing Club on the Derwent in Hobart. Chris was fortunate to snap this lovely shot of two young sailors of the future sailing their dinghy downwind in front of a glorious icon of our sailing past. The yacht in the background is the beautifully restored and maintained William Fife 57’ (+ bowsprit) topsail gaff cutter “Sayonara” built in 1897. She holds a special place in Australia’s sailing history and you can read all about her here: http://classic-yacht.asn.au/boat-register/sayonara/
